Procrastination
simply put is the avoidance of performing a task that needs to be accomplished.
You often hear people say “I don’t feel
like doing this now, let’s just finish this tomorrow, I do my things in the
last minutes” . It feels good making excuses but why the delay when you can quickly finish this task and begin
another, saves time right? Tell you what, it is easier said than done.
This simple
act of postponing a task or event, if not managed becomes a habit and trust me
it takes away your productivity because you always want to do something “tomorrow”. Here are 4 ways you can work on procrastination.
·
Prepare a schedule and be religious about it: This is a war between you and you so don’t take it likely. You
can make a schedule and never adhere to it I am sure you know better. This time involve the oracles, don’t miss a
single task on your schedule; a little trolling will help you, you can let
someone in on your schedule so they can keep you accountable if they can. It could
also be that you are busy organizing the events of the day in your head that’s
why forget to carry out some or waive others until tomorrow, well get you a
jotter or journal and write them in order of priority and see how that works.
·
Keep away from distractions: You
want to watch this TV program and right after, start your task, why can’t you
just finish your task then watch the highlight, replay or watch it on YouTube
but is it that important? While you are carrying out your task stay away from
your phone, you view one notification and before you know it you have been
surfing the net for hours. Keep any form of distraction away until you are done
then you use it to unwind, how is that.
·
Stop making excuses: Why give
yourself one thousand reasons why you can’t. You hear people say “that is just
how I am, I work better under pressure” well have you tried working without
pressure at all? Imagine taking 30 minutes to finish something that should have
been done in 12 hours, it drains you. Drop the excuses and just do it anyway,
the more excuses you give the more you begin to doubt your ability to
accomplish it, so why don’t you surprise yourself.
·
Don’t try to be perfect about it: People make mistakes, it’s OK to make mistakes at least you
tried. Trust me perfectionism will not take you that far, it’s good to keep all
details in check and produce excellent results but what is an excellent when
its past the deadline. Feel free to do a scrappy job and get corrected, that
way you learn.
Procrastination is a killer of time and the enemy of
accomplishment. Go ahead and feel the joy that comes with accomplishment.
